The story behind
MAI-KAI RUM NO. 1

When the Mai-Kai Polynesian Restaurant & Lounge opened in 1956, it quickly set a new standard in tiki cocktails, earning fame for its original tropical libations with perfectly balanced rum blends.

To honor the legacy of the Mai-Kai cocktail, we sought a heritage rum blend to bring authenticity to the iconic drinks our founders created.

An extraordinary team

We collaborated with Master Distiller Don Benn and his team of experts at West Indies Rum Distillery of Brighton Beach, Barbados — as well as the exceptional team at legendary Long Pond Distillery of Trelawny, Jamaica.

The process

With restored copper pot stills that once made rums of the golden era of tiki cocktails, the distillery teams employed legacy rum-making methods. We balanced revered marques from both Barbados and Jamaican distilleries. All to arrive at a faithful reflection of the traditional style of rum in iconic Mai-Kai cocktails.

Our rum heritage

For decades, the Mai-Kai has been renowned for deep expertise in rum mixology — its nuances, sources, flavors, and possibilities. In fact, for many years running, the Mai-Kai was the rum world’s number one single-location seller by volume anywhere. This expertise and knowledge is reflected in our first release, Old Style Special Rum No. 1 — sold exclusively at the Mai-Kai Polynesian Restaurant & Lounge in Fort Lauderdale.
